Lights in the sky haunt TV producer for three decades

Thirty years ago today, strange lights were filmed in the night skies over the Kaikoura coast. Theories ranged from squid boat lights to sightings of Mercury and Venus. Former television producer Leonard Lee recalls his involvement in the Kaikoura UFO mystery.
On the morning of December 31, 1978, I received an early-morning call from Neil Miller my chief-of-staff in the newsroom at Channel 0 (now Channel Ten) in Melbourne. He was babbling, telling me one of our reporters and a freelance film crew had filmed UFOs from a freight plane in the skies over Kaikoura the previous night.
My friend - and fellow Kiwi - Quentin Fogarty was the reporter. I had sent him to recap another apparent encounter by two pilots 10 days earlier. The objects were also seen by the two pilots, Bill Startup and Bob Guard, Quentin's cameraman, David Crocket, and his wife, Ngaire, the sound recordist.

University sends UFO course into deep space

A UFO group in Hong Kong has condemned the city's largest university for cancelling a course on ufology because, it said, of faculty objections to the subject. The course was set to begin last September as an optional subject for University of Hong Kong students in a joint project between the university and the Hong Kong Institute of Ufology, local newspaper Apple Daily reported on Monday.
The course was delayed and discussions were held on offering it at a later date after some academics expressed reservations about its content, Moon Fong, a committee member of the institute, told reporters.
"Some members of the university's science faculty were concerned that the course would present only the views of the UFO experts," Fong said. "But we believed that they were just worried about the possibility of ufology becoming a mainstream discipline at the university," she said.

Exeter - the East Coast Roswell

"It was duskish. I saw a ball of bright white light with golden-yellowish edges about 20 feet above my head," recalled Andrew Ulery of his encounter with a glowing orb on Park Street, when he was a freshman in high school. "It was following me for about a full minute, until I reached the bridge that crosses the railroad." (Visitors to Exeter have reported observing a pyramid of lights above this section of the railroad tracks.)
Ulery, the black-bearded manager of the Loaf and Ladle, who is seldom separated from a sporty cap, said the "ball of lightning" was about the size of a basketball and he remembered "being glad I didn't scuff my feet — that lightning thing."
As Ulery reached the bridge, the object "just took off" and he recalled a "surreal feeling" and being mesmerized by it.

UFO enthusiasts call on Obama to release X-Files

Desperate to see the US emulate the British Government and disclose reported "contact" with UFOs, the enthusiasts have written to Mr Obama to ask that his administration comes clean about the contents of America's "X-Files".
They believe they have good prospects of success after public statements of support from both John Podesta, who is running Mr Obama's White House transition team, and Bill Richardson, the Governor of New Mexico - a UFO sighting hotspot - who is expected to secure a cabinet post. In the letter to Mr Obama, the Extraterrestrial Phenomenon Political Action Committee calls on the President-Elect to "end the six-decade truth embargo regarding an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race".
The group wants the incoming president to insist on a "full briefing from your military services and intelligence agencies regarding what they know" and to open congressional hearings "to take testimony from scores of government witnesses who have already come forward with extraordinary evidence and are prepared to testify under oath."

"I was terrified. As soon as the sun went down, I knew they'd be there." Jane Nelms says throughout her life, she's had constant visitors not of this earth. She says it all started on night in 1973, when a brilliant white light appeared in her bedroom window. "As I pulled the drape aside, all of a sudden there were 5 beings all around me."
Nelms has drawn pictures of the 5 beings she says that came in quickly that night and took her. "I could not move, couldn't do a thing. And I was trying to grab the railings to stop myself from being taken. They had total control." She says they carried her to their ship, and one of them even spoke.
"He said in a very monotone voice, 'Jane, it is your time to come.' And I said, 'I am not going anywhere.' He said, 'Why not you come with us?' I mean, just very, very few words. I said, Because they need me here on Earth. I have family, I have friends.' 'It is your time to come now.'"
